Why Naiades?

The Naiades are a collective name for mythological figures. They were the Nymphs of specific lakes and rivers and gave their name to the springs with which they were connected. They were considered immortal little deities. Their most common nicknames were: Krinides, Potamides, Limnades [or Limnakides], Eleionomi, etc. Their father, according to Homer, was Zeus [Iliad N 440]. The most famous of these were: Ava, Aigli, Akraia, Evia, Nomia, Perivoia, Igeria, Kastalia, Kreousa, Salamis. The names Arethousa, Vateia, Leiriopi, Lilaia, Lymfa, Meliti, Salmakis and Syrigx are added to some mythical writers. The most famous of all was Arethousa, Naiada of the homonymous spring which gushed on the island of Ortygia. The Fairies are considered a natural folklore "successor" of the Naiades.
